Brrrr! The cold tests us…

The temperature on the thermometer was -33°C (-27.4°F) this morning around 5am when I woke up.  That is c-c-c-cold!
The recent cold days have brought some surprises along…  A cracked windshield on the truck and frozen pipes in the house.

The pipes must have froze up shortly after DH headed out since he was able to shower with no problems.  I only noticed it as I tried to run the water to brush my chompers.  Unfortunately, I don’t know the method for unfreezing our pipes around here so I will have to wait for him to get home before I have running water again.  Hopefully no damage happens in the meantime.   We have at least 180 litres of “emergency” water stored downstairs, with more in the garage (which is frozen lol), so temporary lack of flow isn’t a huge deal for us.

The windshield just decided it didn’t like the cold and cracked straight up from the bottom of the window then straight across from the passenger side to the middle of the window.  This happened a couple days ago when it was only -12.

Then after 30 minutes of driving this morning, the crack decided it was going to finish ‘er off and cruise right on over to the other side of the windshield.  There were no stone chips, no previous cracks, and no damage whatsoever, it just cracked.  Since this is the first winter the truck has seen, DH contacted the Dodge dealership who said for us to bring it in for them to look at, although they said is most likely nothing they can do for it under warranty.  With only around 17,000 km (~10,500 miles) on the truck, this shouldn’t have happened.  Does the Chrysler warranty expect us to replace the windshield each time the weather drops down below freezing?

Luckily as a back up plan I can put an insurance claim in for it and it won’t make my premium increase.  I just hate to use that up on something that appears to be a problem with the glass used in these vehicles.  After reading forum posts on this topic, there have been many others that experienced the same thing with this truck,  you would think that Chrysler would do something about it by now after so many complaints.

This is just a minor hiccup that we are prepared to deal with.  Makes me think about what else could happen this winter that we are not ready for… I will discuss this soon.
